BONNER ROAD

‘Bonner Road’ – Bonner Road, Old Ford Road, St James Avenue – 2025 – Lawrence Brand

This scene is one I was really keen to capture, because it’s one I’ve cycled through so many times and have always been struck by the space that’s formed at the meeting of Bonner Road, Old Ford Road, and St Andrews Avenue in Bethnal Green. It’s an unusual little triangle of open space between the abandoned buildings of the Old London Chest Hospital, and the bustling life and busyness of the flats and houses that surround it.

I wanted to capture this kind of ‘in between’ moment – long after the London Chest Hospital had shut down, but also long before it’s redevelopment into housing commences. For this window in time the area is quieter than it has been, with none of the coming and goings of the hospital, but without the new residents and life that will fill it up again soon. For now, it’s this in-between space, and I wanted to capture it in this in-between evening light.
