I don’t think anyone’s going to argue that setting off late night fireworks in the street is a good thing! They’re harmful to people, animals, and the environment, and leave the communities around them shaken and sleepless. So I wouldn’t want my new painting to be seen as glorifying them… but I do think that despite the inherent problem of it happening, there is a real beauty in how they look.

I love how that single bright flash of colour totally transforms everything around it. With the smoke hanging down the road, and the whole street suddenly painted red, it’s a scene I wanted to turn into an oil painting as a little record that this does happen today, and here’s what it looks like.

As a self taught painter I’m also always keen to try and put challenging new elements into new pictures as I begin work on them. So creating this view from above, with the firework turning every surface it reaches red, and the smoke and fog filling the streets off into the distance… it was definitely a good challenge! To add a little more challenge again, the colours in the painting are also all translucent too, so that it bounces light back to the viewer and make the scene come to life as if it’s lit up from within!
